This gallery features larger paintings. Each painting is done on 100 % cotton, 300 lbs Fabriano paper.  I use only the highest quality pigments and each framed piece is professionally done with acid free matting and conservation glass. This insures that the artwork will be protected for years and remain in excellent condition to be passed down to your children and grandchildren.

I don't think we can take it for
granted that a mask
will always
hide us from others. Often the
the mask we choose to wear
reveals something about ourselves
that we could easily keep hidden
with our faces bare.

3. "Inside the Ocean"
mermaid diving (right)

watercolour and gold acrylic ink
framed
size approx 28 x 21 inches

She prays to the ocean,
to the element that holds her.

A private moment.
A personal moment.

4. "Portrait of Joseph"

portrait (left)
graphite
unframed
size approx 29 x 22 inches

This is a portrait of my brother, Joseph.

Joseph sat for me for about 35 hours.
Of course, those hours took place

over a matter of weeks. Usually each

sitting was about 2 hours long.

5. "Imagining my Gramma's Wedding"
bride and groom descending church steps (right)
watercolour and embossing
framed
size approx 29 x 22 inches

Not too long ago my grandmother told me that she was married during a February snowstorm! I had never heard this before! Instantly an idea for a painting exploded in my head, momentarily blinding me. I couldn't wait to begin.

Luckily, I had visited the church in which she was married when I was 7 years old and I remembered
it well.  My gramma had taken me to her village of Zlobin for the summer and this trip made a lasting impression on me. Without these memories this painting would have been impossible.

As the painting developed, I decided not to put in the snow because I thought it would compete too much with the bride. However, I'm thinking of doing another version of this painting where the snow is takes centre stage.

 6. "Self-Portrait"
clown with white face (left)
watercolour
unframed
size 29 x 22

When I lived in Halifax (it seems like a
lifetime ago now!) I did some clowning
with my good friend Kathy McGillvary.
She's a professional clown and she
convinced me to work with her one
summer. We did outside performances,
parades and a travelling show.

I had always been fascinated by the
art of clowning and clowns have been
in my paintings since forever. But, working
with Kathy put it in my blood even stronger.

Now fastforward to Atikokan. My mother
spearheaded the creation of the Atikokan
Art Centre and she thought the Centre
should have a clowning troupe. We had one
for a couple of years and it was so much fun!

Coming home one night after one of our
gigs I looked in the mirror and thought,
"Hey! I should paint my portrait!" Promptly
I set up my easle and went to work.
In the middle of the night I was done.

7. "Backstage"
actors applying make-up (right)
unframed
watercolour and graphite
size approx 18 x 20 inches

This painting
began when I
was staring
at my mom's
clothes line
and I suddenly
saw how
beautiful it
was. I painted the
clothesline though
I had no idea what
else the painting
would include.
After some time
the figures
developed
to create a theatre
scene with the
sheet on the line
becoming
the stage curtain.

8. "Frost"
figure walking through winter landscape (left)
watercolour
framed
size approx 29 x 22 inches

This painting reminds me of the
winter nights I spent walking
through farmland outside of
Zagreb as snow fell on the
surrounding hills.

9. "Tranquil Storm"

woman playing viola (right)
watercolour
framed
size approx 29 x 22 inches

As a starting point for this painting
I used one of the drawings I did of
musicians while attending an orchestra
performance.
When I'm painting I like to take
chaotic shapes and explosions of
colour and gently corral then into
harmony though I purposefully leave
in the feeling that, at any moment, the
painting is liable to return to
uncontrolable bucking and rearing.
